Repeat CustomersA few dozen shoppers of varying species milled around Station Zeta’s main plaza. Whoever said space was serene obviously never set foot on an orbital trading post. While Zeta was far from the most popular market in ungoverned space, it sure felt like it to anyone caught in the dinner rush. If a patron wasn’t careful, it was easy to spill their meal as they jostled through the crowds. Without a doubt, elbow room was hard to come by for everyone. Well, hard for anyone who wasn’t a Gurk.
Venka leaned against a recessed wall so her back and bushy tail pressed against the cool metal. The plaza’s simulated sky was set to night, draping the female Gurk in a soft shadow. Her blue fur and muted clothing blended into the darkness, leaving her nearly invisible except for one detail. Venka’s luminous, golden eyes betrayed her position, but she preferred it this way.
Two hungry Vilo engineers approached Venka’s spot
SS: Interrogation Part 2 Atlas snarled and thrashed, but gave up struggling within seconds. The Gurk knelt by him, then grabbed Atlas’s feathery head through the bars and held him with one hand while he held the laser by Atlas’s eye.
Kervak imagined the laser slicing into her friend. She couldn’t watch that. “I tell you. Leave him alone, please.” She forced back tears. She’d failed. The pirates would take her ship and kill her and Atlas. At least they might be quick about it if she told them. The ship was complicated, but if she lied about how to fly it, she had no doubt these Gurks would get revenge on her and Atlas.
“I figured you’d come to your senses.” The Gurk smiled and turned off the laser.
“Kervak, don’t,” Atlas snapped. “Don’t let your ship fall into their hands on my account.”
The Gurk stared a
SS: Interrogation Part 1 Kervak forced her eyes open. The light, though not overly bright, felt like a stab of pain into her pounding skull. She took stock of her situation. She hung from a wall in the brig of a ship she’d never seen, shackles holding her wrists and leaving her spread out like a science project waiting to be dissected.
She closed her eyes against the light and tried to put her scrambled thoughts together. Best she could remember, Gurks had somehow gotten aboard her ship, but she couldn’t recal how. She forced her eyes open again. A tall Gurk male stood in front of her. Behind him in the brig lay Atlas, bound from beak to tail. A few cables lashed him to the cell bars for good measure. Whoever these Gurk pirates were, they weren’t taking chances, but at least Atlas was alive, for now.
Kervak spat at the Gurk, who only blinked and folded his arms across his chest. “We can do this the easy

"A man who governs his passions is master of his world. We must either command them or be enslaved by them. It is better to be a hammer than an anvil."
